Ingredient Notes

  • Chicken wings: A chicken wing is made of two sections that are usually separated before preparing. The two sections are called drums and flats. The drums are the single-bone meaty portion of the wing and the flats are the double-bone flatter section of the wings. Both are equally delicious!
  • All-purpose flour: Standard all-purpose flour works best here. If you need a substitute, use a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
  • Salt: Fine salt mixes evenly into the flour coating.
  • Chili powder: Use regular chili powder, not chipotle or cayenne, unless you want extra heat.
  • Ground black pepper: I like to grind fresh pepper.
  • Cayenne pepper: This adds heat! If you prefer mild wings, reduce the amount rather than skipping it entirely.
  • Smoked paprika: Smoked paprika gives a deeper flavor than sweet paprika. Either works if smoked is not available.
  • Onion powder: Onion powder is more consistent than onion salt here since the recipe already includes salt.
  • Garlic powder: Use garlic powder, not garlic salt, to keep the seasoning balanced.
  • Poultry seasoning: Any standard poultry seasoning blend works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Do you Cook Wings in an Air Fryer?

Chicken wings can be prepared in your air fryer in right around 20 minutes. To ensure even cooking and optimal crispiness, when you air fry your wings, make sure they are placed in a single layer and flipped halfway through the cooking time.

Can You Stack Breaded Chicken in an Air Fryer?

To ensure your chicken wings are evenly cooked, your wings should be placed in a single layer and flipped halfway through the cooking time. If you stack them, you will need to "toss" your wings frequently by giving the air fryer basket a good shake and extend the cooking time until all of the wings are cooked through.

Are Air-Fried Chicken Wings Healthy?

Cooking chicken wings in an air fryer is definitely healthier than fried chicken wings! The air fryer eliminates deep-frying oil, but still yields amazing crispy wings.
  • Use a single layer for even cooking.
  • Flip the wings halfway through the cook time.
  • Cook in batches if your air fryer basket is small.
  • Cook until cooked through and crispy.

Can This Recipe Be Made With Frozen Chicken Wings?

For best results, your wings should be fully thawed when making breaded wings. In order for the flour mixture to adhere to the wings properly, the wings cannot be frozen.
