A few months ago, I shared a recipe on the blog for my very favorite homemade cocktail sauce.  After I shared that post, one of my readers emailed me to ask if I had a pink sauce for shrimp on the blog, too.

Well, I love the sauce they serve with shrimp at Japanese steakhouses and, I agreed with my reader, it was high time I had a recipe for it on the blog!

This deliciously addictive sauce is called yum yum sauce and it is oh so yummy!

It's creamy, zippy, and a little bit sweet and the perfect accompaniment for your shrimp.  Once you discover how easy you can make it at home, you'll want to skip the steakhouse and stay in!

WHAT IS YUM YUM SAUCE?

Yum yum sauce, also known as white sauce or shrimp sauce, is a popular Japnese Steakhouse condiment. It doesn't have origins in traditional Japanese culture but is widely known and found at hibachi grills across the United States. It's creamy, a little tangy, a little sweet, and absolutely yummy!

WHY DO THEY CALL IT YUM YUM SAUCE?

Yum yum sauce got its name from a gentleman named Terry Ho who bottled and sold his white shrimp sauce recipe. He is said to have named it yum yum sauce simply because it's yummy!

Yum yum sauce is made with a few simple ingredients:
  • mayonnaise

  • rice vinegar
  • salt
  • water

HOW TO MAKE YUM YUM SAUCE

WHAT DO YOU EAT YUM YUM SAUCE WITH?

Yum yum sauce is delicious served with shrimp, chicken, seafood, and even vegetables. It is a versatile sauce that is good with so much more than just your Japanese steakhouse favorites! You can even try it as a french fry dip, chicken wing dip, or salad dressing.

TOMATO PASTE OR KETCHUP?

Tomato paste will make the best yum yum sauce, but you can totally use ketchup in a pinch if you have no tomato paste. However, if you use ketchup, you can reduce the sugar by half since ketchup is already sweetened.  I like to buy my tomato paste in a tube as opposed to a can because it's much easier to use just a little bit like with this recipe. It's convenient to just put the cap back on the tube and stick it in the fridge until you need it for another recipe!

HOW LONG DOES YUM YUM SAUCE LAST?

Yum yum sauce will last covered in your refrigerator for up to one week.
