Raise your hand if you love mozzarella sticks! There's something so irresistible about melty, stringy, gooey, delicious mozzarella cheese, am I right?

Both kids and adults can't resist frozen mozzarella sticks, which makes them the perfect appetizer for families. Everyone loves a cheesy appetizer!

This particular mozzarella stick recipe is a bit different from the variety you usually get at a restaurant.

I assure you, though, they are still perfectly dunkable and ooze that melty cheese you desire from a mozzarella stick.  I have a strong hunch you're going to love learning to air fry cheese sticks like this.

The big difference between traditional mozzarella sticks and this air fryer recipe is that these mozzarella sticks aren't coated in breadcrumbs, they're wrapped in an egg roll wrapper. Yes, I said egg roll wrappers. Stay with me here, I promise they're delish.

You pop them in the air fryer instead of frying them in oil and the end result is a little bit crisp on the outside and hot and gooey on the inside. Cooking mozzarella sticks in the air fryer is way healthier than the traditional frying in oil method, which is a total bonus!

I think you will LOVE this fun twist on mozzarella sticks!

How to Make Wonton Mozzarella Sticks in the Air Fryer

Wonton mozzarella sticks are made by wrapping mozzarella string cheese in egg roll wrappers which are sealed with just a little bit of water. They are air-fried until the outside is golden and the cheese is melted. See below for detailed recipe instructions.

Should I Use Wonton Wrappers or Egg Roll Wrappers?

So, egg roll wrappers and wonton wrappers are basically the same things, except egg roll wrappers are much bigger. I like to use full-size string cheese and an egg roll wrapper to make these mozzarella sticks. Yes, the title does say wonton, but I liked the way wonton mozzarella sticks sounded better than egg roll mozzarella sticks.

Is It Easy to Make Wonton Mozzarella Sticks?

Making wonton homemade mozzarella sticks couldn't be easier! They are a fun alternative to frozen cheese sticks. The hardest part is making sure that the wrapper sides are folded in well and the egg roll wrapper is completely sealed so that all of the gooey cheese doesn't ooze out during cooking.

Are Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks Healthy?

Wonton mozzarella sticks are a healthy air fryer appetizer and weigh in at just 100 calories each. They are a great alternative to mozzarella sticks that are fried in oil.

How to Reheat Air Fryer Cheese Sticks?

Reheat wonton mozzarella sticks in your air fryer straight from the refrigerator at 350 degrees F for 6 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time.

INGREDIENTS

6 mozzarella cheese sticks
6 egg roll wrappers
olive oil cooking spray
kosher salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place a piece of string cheese near the bottom corner of the egg roll wrapper. Roll up halfway and carefully fold the sides toward the center over the cheese. Dip your finger in water and trace the edges of the wrapper. Roll the remaining wrapper around the mozzarella stick. Repeat with remaining wrappers and cheese.
  2. Place six of the mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket and spray with olive oil spray. Sprinkle with kosher salt.
  3. Air fry at 350 degrees for 3 minutes, flip, spray the other side with olive oil spray and sprinkle with kosher salt, then continue cooking for another 3 minutes until they are crisp and golden brown. Serve with a marinara sauce or your choice of dipping sauces, if desired.

NOTES

Mozzarella sticks should not touch each other when air frying.

Make sure your string cheese is cold, not room temperature when making this recipe.

If your cheese completely oozed out of your mozzarella stick during the cooking time, you either (1) cooked them too long, (2) didn't seal the corners and edges with water well enough, or (3) didn't use cold mozzarella cheese. The wrapper should have no cracks or holes. A small amount of cheese oozing from the end of the mozzarella stick is normal, but not all of the cheese should melt out. The mozzarella cheese should be just melted and the wrapper will be crispy on the edges and slightly chewy towards the middle.

Cooking time will vary between different models of air fryer. I use the Ninja 4-Quart Air Fryer.
