How many of you out there can say that you've eaten turnips? I'd be willing to bet it's not that many of you.

When I was growing up, turnips never made an appearance at our table and I ended up never even trying one until I was an adult.

Turnips came into my life via my CSA, and I was super excited when they did. Belonging to a CSA has given me the opportunity to try lots of new veggies that may have not crossed my path otherwise.

Turnips are surprisingly zippy upon the first bite and are a truly unique veggie. I loved pairing them with Cajun spices. I hope you love it, too!

HOW TO MAKE PAN FRIED TURNIPS

Pan fried turnips are easy to make! First, fresh turnips are peeled and diced. They are cooked in a frying pan in olive oil and butter until softened and browned. Then, the turnips are seasoned with Cajun seasoning. See below for detailed recipe instructions.

WHAT ARE TURNIPS?

Turnips are a root vegetable in the same family as radishes. They have a zippy, spicy taste that can sometimes be bitter. When turnips are cooked, the bitterness and zip mellow.

DO YOU PEEL TURNIPS BEFORE COOKING THEM?

Turnips can be prepared similarly to potatoes and, like potatoes, turnips can be prepared peeled or unpeeled. The outside of a turnip is totally edible.

WHAT TO SERVE TURNIPS WITH?

Turnips can be eaten as a side dish with proteins like beef, chicken, and pork. They can also be paired with other root vegetables like potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes.
