If there's one food combination I love, it's sausage, peppers, and onions. Italian sausage, to be exact. Throw in some mushrooms and I am in heaven! If you're reading this, my guess is you're a sausage lover, too.

When you think of a sausage sandwich, you probably think of big hunks of sausage and strips of peppers and onions. That's what initially comes to mind for me. This sandwich has all the same flavor, but it's just in a bit of a different form.

This recipe uses bulk Italian sausage that is cooked up just like you would ground beef. The veggies are diced instead of being cut into strips, which makes for easy eating.

What I love most about this recipe compared to the usual style sausage and peppers sandwich is that this one is baked in the oven.

Oh, yes, this baked sandwich hits all the notes! The savory sausage, the sweet veggies, the melty mozzarella, and the oven-toasted bun all come together perfectly.

If you like a saucy sausage sandwich, skip adding the sauce before baking it and try serving it on the side as a dip. If you add the sauce to the sandwich, you risk that perfect crunch the bun gets from the baking process.

HOW TO MAKE BAKED SAUSAGE SANDWICHES

Baked Sausage Sandwiches are made by stuffing ground sausage and fresh vegetables into hoagie rolls that are topped with mozzarella cheese and baked in the oven. See below for detailed recipe instructions.

WHAT KIND OF SAUSAGE SHOULD I USE?

This recipe uses bulk Italian sausage. Bulk sausage is in the same form as ground beef and can be cooked and crumbled. I like to buy the Jimmy Dean brand sold in a roll, but you can often find it in your meat department sold on a tray like ground beef. If you can't find bulk Italian sausage, you can buy Italian sausage links and remove the sausage from the casings before browning.

DO I HAVE TO BAKE THEM?

Yes! The beauty of these sandwiches is in the baking! Baking will give your rolls a nice crisp crunch on the outside and a soft delicious inside. Not to mention the fact that baking the sandwiches melts the mozzarella cheese. So, yes, bake these babies!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH BAKED SAUSAGE SANDWICHES

I like to serve Baked Sausage Sandwiches with a side salad. The sandwich is nice a hearty, so a light side like a salad is perfect! If you're not a salad fan, fries always work with hot sandwiches. The sandwiches are also great with a side of marinara sauce for dipping!

prep time: cook time: total time: 25 MIN

INGREDIENTS

1 pound bulk Italian sausage
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup mushrooms, diced
1/2 cup bell pepper, diced
1/2 cup red onion, diced
4 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
4 (6-inch) hoagie rolls

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a glass baking dish with olive oil spray or non-stick cooking spray.

2. In a large non-stick skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes. Add the Italian sausage to the skillet and cook until browned and crumbled. Drain any excess grease from the pan.

3. Sliced the hoagie rolls lengthwise, being careful not to slice them all the way through. Arrange the rolls in your baking dish.

4. Fill the rolls equally with half of the mozzarella cheese, then the sausage mixture, followed by the remaining cheese.

5. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
